Abstract

The fast development of technology in the digital era has significantly transformed various aspects of human life, including education. In the context of Society 5.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an important innovation that supports English Language Teaching (ELT) by providing easier access to information, language learning platforms, and automated learning assistance. Despite the growing integration of AI in ELT, limited studies have examined university students’ critical awareness toward AI use within the human-centered principles of Society 5.0. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether university students still possess critical awareness toward the use of AI in the era of Society 5.0. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method using questionnaires as the primary instrument for collecting data. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, involving active university students in the sixth and eighth semesters as the research population. The findings indicate that most students positively perceive AI as a supportive learning tool in English language learning; however, varying levels of critical awareness were identified in terms of validating AI-generated information, ethical use of AI, and maintaining independent thinking skills. The study concludes that although AI provides numerous benefits in ELT, students still need to strengthen their critical thinking abilities and maintain human-centered learning values to use AI responsibly and effectively in the educational process.
