Investigating EFL Students’ Language Awareness of English-Indonesian Code-Switching on Social Media Platforms
Penelitian tentang Kesadaran Bahasa Siswa EFL Terhadap Perpindahan Kode Bahasa Inggris-Indonesia di Platform Media Sosial
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates language awareness toward English–Indonesian code-switching on social media among EFL learners in Kampung Inggris Pare. Using a qualitative content analysis design, the research analyzed bilingual expressions found in captions, comments, memes, and online conversations on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that English–Indonesian code-switching is frequently used as a communication strategy to express emotions, follow digital trends, and build social identity, while also contributing to learners’ vocabulary awareness, contextual understanding, and familiarity with English expressions. However, excessive exposure to informal bilingual language may influence learners’ understanding of formal English usage. Therefore, the study suggests that social media can function as an alternative environment for language awareness development and informal English learning among EFL learners.
