Abstract

Inclusive English classrooms require teaching approaches that not only support linguistic development but also encourage students to critically engage with language, identity, and social realities. However, many English language teaching practices still prioritize grammatical competence and standardized outcomes, while critical language awareness remains insufficiently integrated into inclusive learning environments. This study aims to explore pedagogical strategies that can enhance students’ critical language awareness in inclusive English classrooms and examine how these strategies contribute to more participatory and reflective learning experiences. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving English teachers and students in inclusive classroom settings. The findings reveal that dialogic teaching, collaborative learning, reflective discussion, culturally responsive materials, and multimodal learning activities play significant roles in fostering students’ critical engagement with language use and social issues. These strategies also create a more supportive classroom atmosphere where students from diverse backgrounds feel encouraged to express opinions and participate actively in classroom interaction. In addition, the integration of inclusive pedagogical practices was found to strengthen students’ confidence, empathy, and awareness of linguistic diversity. The study concludes that enhancing critical language awareness in inclusive English classrooms requires pedagogical approaches that combine language instruction with critical reflection, inclusivity, and meaningful social interaction. Such approaches can contribute to the development of more equitable and socially responsive English language learning environments.
